We are two tenant associations who joined together to defend ourselves against a corporate real estate investment hydra that seeks to expel us from our homes in order to maximize their profits.

Blog Description

Occupy East 4th Street is written by members of two East Village tenant associations that formed after a man named Ben Shaoul bought 118 and 120 East 4th Street, the buildings we live in. Mr. Shaoul is the head of Magnum Management and is in a partnership with Meadow Partners, a real estate investment company whose founder is Jeffrey M Kaplan. The company that manages our buildings is called Fortune East LLC. Over the past year, Mr. Shaoul and his partners have started to empty our buildings of tenants, many of whom are rent-stabilized and senior citizens, do a cheap renovation and raise rents beyond market rate. Our goals include keeping our homes, upholding our rights, and maintaining East 4th Street as the diverse and mixed-income block it's always been.

Along with addressing these issues, this blog is also about human relations, political organizing, expressing and informing people about their rights, humor, the importance of community and maintaining the diverse neighborhoods of New York City.
